According to legend, a travelling shoemaker, who had been sentenced to death, was given a chance to redeem himself by working on the edge of Skomakarnibbå, or ‘The Shoemaker’s Crag’. Just shy of finishing his work, he got distracted by a wedding procession on the mountainside below, became dizzy, and tumbled over the edge, never to be seen again.
Join Outdoorlife Norway on a guided day-hike to Skomakarnibbå and experience one of Ryfylke’s true hidden gems. Hike through diverse landscapes, visit an authentic mountain farm, and experience the exhilaration of standing atop an overhanging cliff 700 meters above the Jøsenfjord.
Before beginning the day’s journey, your guide will meet you at your pre-selected pick-up location. While enjoying stunning views of fjords, lakes, and mountains, you’ll be transported along the scenic Ryfylke National Tourist Road, including driving the world’s longest undersea road tunnel. After a short briefing at the trailhead, you’ll embark on your journey to Skomakarnibbå.
After walking just 200 meters, you’ll pass Hagalid Mountain Farm, which is situated 300 meters above the Jøsenfjord. Production at the farm includes livestock (mainly sheep) and Christmas trees. The property also includes large wooded areas that are mainly used as hunting grounds. The original farm building, ‘Sofie’s House’, was built in 1840 and has been refurbished to preserve many of its original details.
The trail to Skomakarnibbå, which is 7-kilometers long (roundtrip), crosses through bogs, farm yards, forests, and fields of grazing sheep. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Ullsvikjuvet Gorge, the Jøsenfjord, and the surrounding islands and mountains of Ryfylke. After about 3 hours of hiking and an elevation gain of 450 meters, you’ll reach Skomakarnibbå, 700 meters above the Jøsenfjord.
After taking a break to enjoy the views and your packed lunch, your guide will lead you back down to Hagalid Mountain Farm, which will take about 2 hours. During the summer, both Sofie’s House and the farm’s old smokehouse become galleries that exhibit handiwork from local artisans. Guests can purchase artwork such as ceramics, paintings, jewelry, sketches, and items made of hand-blown glass. At Hagalid’s quaint café, you’ll enjoy a warm cup of coffee and freshly-made Norwegian waffles (Thursdays & Fridays) or a warm bowl of freshly-made soup (Saturdays & Sundays). After the break, your guide will lead you back to the trailhead and then transport you back to Stavanger.
This is a moderately-demanding 5-6 hour, 7-kilometer hike with a total ascent of 450 meters. It's suitable for participants over the age of 8 who are in generally good physical condition & have previous hiking experience.
