Enjoy a private tour to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock and explore the Lysefjord on your own terms. Experience Norway’s pristine mountain air while hiking on trails that were recently upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. In addition to setting your own tour schedule, hiking with a personal guide allows you to get the most out of your adventure.

On an annual basis, the iconic Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2018, approximately 300,000 hikers made their way up to the imposing plateau. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, the panoramic view of the Lysefjord is one of the most impressive Fjord-Norway has to offer.

Book Outdoorlife Norway’s privately-guided hike to Preikestolen and enjoy an intimate, hassle-free visit to one of Norway’s most iconic natural landmarks. Get an introduction to the region’s mountains, islands, and urban fjords from aboard coastal ferries and enjoy breathtaking views of the Lysefjord from atop Preikestolen. Following the hike, savor a warm bowl of soup and freshly baked bread at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge and then conclude your day with a visit to the ‘Swords in Rock’ Viking monument, which was created by a local artist, Fritz Røed.*

This tour is a great option for cruise ship passengers, looking for a private tour without having to worry about logistics or getting back to the cruise ship in time.

After being picked up at the time and location of your choosing (see ‘Duration and Pick-up Details’ tab, above), your adventure will begin with a 40-minute ferry ride across one of the area’s many urban fjords. From aboard the boat, in addition to viewing Stavanger’s city center from a different perspective, you’ll catch your first glimpses of the region’s spectacular nature. Once ashore, you’ll be transported to the base of the hiking trail, which takes about 30 minutes. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on your hike to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock.

Your guide will lead you up through shifting terrain that, depending on the time of year, may be vibrantly green, shades of yellow, orange, and red, or covered in snow and ice. Each season is unique, and offers guests a different perspective of the Lysefjord. Along the way, while passing lakes, forests, and bogs, you’ll stop at numerous vantage points, which offer great views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll also be given ample opportunities to catch your breath and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you. As you leave the forests behind, your guide will lead you onward to the mountain’s plateau. After 2-3 hours of hiking, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer. From atop the 604-meter-high cliff, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains.

After a snack and warm beverage at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead to back down to the trailhead, which will take about 2 hours. If conditions allow, your guide will navigate down a different trail. This alternative route, which is not found on any maps, avoids people hiking up the main trail to Preikestolen, and offers visitors a more secluded experience. Once back at the base of the trail, while enjoying beautiful views of Refsvatnet lake, you’ll relax while savoring a warm bowl of soup and freshly-baked bread at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.

After the well-deserved break, you’ll begin your journey back to Stavanger. Your guide will follow a different route, which includes a second ferry crossing that offers unique views of the mouth of the Lysefjord. Your fjord adventure will conclude with a stop at the Viking monument ‘Swords in Rock’, which is located on the shore of the Hafrsfjord, where king Harald Fairhair’s triumph in battle (between the years of 872 and 900) resulted in Norway finally becoming one kingdom.
